Conventions

Every magazine has conventions. These are typical, expected things that an audience expects from a magazine or newspaper. These are things like The masthead. This is the title representing the magazine. Both school magazines i have analysed have a masthead that's because this is a convention of a magazine. Both magazines have large imagine in the centre of the page to capture the readers attention. The picture uses appropriate colours to represent the male and female connection and they are also of a reasonable size and easy to understand. Both magazines have plugs at the top which indicate what else will be in the magazine so informs the reader of what other topics they can investigate. Finally both magazines have a headline which is simple, short and snappy which interests the audience and is effective for the aimed target audience.
These are conventions used for both a mass audience and a niche audience:
- A Masthead
- A Head Line
- A Sub Head line
- A main image being supported by the headline
- A line displaying the date, price and website/email
- Plugs
-Puffs
- Some include a tagline.

-Sell Line

This Grazia magazine isn't a school magazine like the two i have previously talked about but it does use conventions like the others. It has a large background image which is the audiences focus point. It is of a celebrity looking rather happy which suggests the article is going to be telling the reader good points about how the celebrity is currently feeling and informing the reader of all the good things that's happening in her life right now. If the celebrity was looking deprived and unhappy the reader would immediately recognise what the article is going to be about. It would be about something drastic that's happened or happening with the celebrity. The title 'Grazia' is in large, bold white serif font. This shows that the magazine is classy and quite formal. This stands out from the other colours in the background. On the front page of ever magazine their has to be a price and date of when the magazine was made. Their also should be on every magazine the website you can visit and email adress if you want to comment on the magazine. There is a logo right at the top of the page advertising how popular the magazine is and how well it does by quoting 'Britain's No1' To separate the attention off Angelina Jolie in the middle of the page. The picture is of Angelina smiling but wearing sunglasses which suggests she may be happy bu they may be something worrying her as the black sunglasses make her look mysterious and perhaps not showing her true emotions. There is a smaller picture of Kylie Minogue in the top right hand corner which shows the reader that the magazine is aimed at teenagers and working class adults because it is packed with celebrity gossip and that is usually what middle class working people would like to know about. This is called a sell line including a plug because it is advertising what that section is about and persuading the reader to carry on reading. There are two sell lines on the page. The main heading is about Angelina's story. Angelina is in red which alerts the reader and the rest of the heading is in white which links in with the masthead. The heading includes a quote what Angelina has said to her friends which makes the reader think what they are going to read must be true because she has told her friends. At the bottom of the page their is an advertisement of jeans which attracts the younger female generation as it is showing off new fashion statements and that is what teenagers are interested in. There is also an alliteration subheading. 'Figure Fixing' this attracts the audience because most females are conscious about their weight and this advertising slimming jeans will automatically make the reader want to read and find out more. This theme of colors is also red and white which links with the rest of the splash. The full page has so much information but because of the way it has been published it looks really neat and effective, and because their is so much shown on the front page it makes the reader want to look further into it. However this could also be a downside because the front page does hold so much information and text the reader could just look at the front page and not consider purchasing it because they already know what is going to be inside it.
