other magazine analysis

This NME magazine is quite similar to the Grazia one in the way it has so much information on the front page. The masthead 'NME' is in red and is all the same size and in capitals which states it's importance. It is outlines in white which makes it look bolder and reflects off the jet black background. The black background represents a slight Gothic look and the band 'The Verve' who is the main focus point on the page, they are also dark as their hair is black and their faces look quite pasty. You cant see any of their bodies just their top half which gives the look an edgy appeal. The subheadings across the page are in either red or white and are all the same size to show equality. The sell line with the other band advertised is slightly off center which makes it more interesting to look at for the reader. All the writing to do with the Verve is blue. The 'V' is in a larger and more scripted font which adds to the Gothic effect where as the 'erve' is in bold and more harsh looking. At the bottom of the page where the plugs about the Klaxons and Radiohead are these are both white and bold and the writing is informing the reader the information about these bands are both red and slightly capitalised. The house style for this magazine is quite unique as the main picture blends into the background slightly but still captures the readers eye. Their is lots of writing but it is all very different which makes the front page look effective and inviting. The magazines information is all about music, new bands, new concerts and gigs so this straight away suggests to the reader that the magazine is aimed at music lovers. Perhaps adults but mainly teenagers.

The BEANO magazine is clearly aimed at younger children probably under the age of 10. The audience know this because of the primary colors used. The bright collection of yellows, blues and reds indicate to the reader that younger children would be more suitable to red this. A main indication of this been a child's magazine is the cartoon image. It is off Dennis the menace and his family. Dennis is getting up to his usual tricks which humours the children and is a reason why they would want the magazine. The image covers the full page and the masthead is right at the top of the page in very big bold writing which makes is simple for the children to read and understand. The magazine is separated into two sections, the title and the image. A subheading is placed on top of the image but still at the top of the page so it doesn't distract the reader from the main focus point, the picture. The heading 'Keeping up with the softies' This is something Dennis would say in the television programme so the audience can relate to this which involves them in whats happening and makes them want to purchase the magazine. Also the writing is slightly cartoon like which links with the picture and it is a very cheap magazine which shows that the magazine wont have any celebrity gossip in like the previous two and that the magazine will all be about Dennis the Menace because they is no other advertisements on the splash.

Conventions

Every magazine has conventions. These are typical, expected things that an audience expects from a magazine or newspaper. These are things like The masthead. This is the title representing the magazine. Both school magazines i have analysed have a masthead that's because this is a convention of a magazine. Both magazines have large imagine in the centre of the page to capture the readers attention. The picture uses appropriate colours to represent the male and female connection and they are also of a reasonable size and easy to understand. Both magazines have plugs at the top which indicate what else will be in the magazine so informs the reader of what other topics they can investigate. Finally both magazines have a headline which is simple, short and snappy which interests the audience and is effective for the aimed target audience.
These are conventions used for both a mass audience and a niche audience:
- A Masthead
- A Head Line
- A Sub Head line
- A main image being supported by the headline
- A line displaying the date, price and website/email
- Plugs
-Puffs
- Some include a tagline.

-Sell Line

This Grazia magazine isn't a school magazine like the two i have previously talked about but it does use conventions like the others. It has a large background image which is the audiences focus point. It is of a celebrity looking rather happy which suggests the article is going to be telling the reader good points about how the celebrity is currently feeling and informing the reader of all the good things that's happening in her life right now. If the celebrity was looking deprived and unhappy the reader would immediately recognise what the article is going to be about. It would be about something drastic that's happened or happening with the celebrity. The title 'Grazia' is in large, bold white serif font. This shows that the magazine is classy and quite formal. This stands out from the other colours in the background. On the front page of ever magazine their has to be a price and date of when the magazine was made. Their also should be on every magazine the website you can visit and email adress if you want to comment on the magazine. There is a logo right at the top of the page advertising how popular the magazine is and how well it does by quoting 'Britain's No1' To separate the attention off Angelina Jolie in the middle of the page. The picture is of Angelina smiling but wearing sunglasses which suggests she may be happy bu they may be something worrying her as the black sunglasses make her look mysterious and perhaps not showing her true emotions. There is a smaller picture of Kylie Minogue in the top right hand corner which shows the reader that the magazine is aimed at teenagers and working class adults because it is packed with celebrity gossip and that is usually what middle class working people would like to know about. This is called a sell line including a plug because it is advertising what that section is about and persuading the reader to carry on reading. There are two sell lines on the page. The main heading is about Angelina's story. Angelina is in red which alerts the reader and the rest of the heading is in white which links in with the masthead. The heading includes a quote what Angelina has said to her friends which makes the reader think what they are going to read must be true because she has told her friends. At the bottom of the page their is an advertisement of jeans which attracts the younger female generation as it is showing off new fashion statements and that is what teenagers are interested in. There is also an alliteration subheading. 'Figure Fixing' this attracts the audience because most females are conscious about their weight and this advertising slimming jeans will automatically make the reader want to read and find out more. This theme of colors is also red and white which links with the rest of the splash. The full page has so much information but because of the way it has been published it looks really neat and effective, and because their is so much shown on the front page it makes the reader want to look further into it. However this could also be a downside because the front page does hold so much information and text the reader could just look at the front page and not consider purchasing it because they already know what is going to be inside it.

2nd Secondary magazine analysis

This is another school magazine. The targe audience is a niche audience this means it is more speicalised. The audiences main focus point is the ginger bread man on a tray, held by a student. I know that it is a student holding the tray because the person is wearing a school tie, a shirt and a red jumper. The student in gender neutralised which doesn't specify any particular gender. The red jumper connects with the plugs at the top of the screen. It is obvious that the gingerbread men are both of different sex as one of them is wearing a skirt which is stereo typical of a school girl and one is wearing just a shirt and tie. It is also interesting to note the boy and the girl are both the same size which suggests the idea of equality between both genders which is how schools should be run.
'Cook With Me' includes a personal pro-noun which is very inviting to the reader. Secondly, it is a sub caption which gives the reader an idea on what the story is about. The font is bold and of a reasonable size which makes it simple to read. It is white which is neutral so attratcs a male and female audience.
The masthead 'Secondary teachers' is in a blue/green shade which is a lot more mature. where as if it was in a shade of pink or red that would be more maternal and warm which would attract a lot younger audience.
The plugs lure the audience in. The colours are red and pink which represetn a male and female audience. The plugs also include an image which intrigue the auidience.
The full page has been seprated into 3 sections. This breaks it up and makes it look more presentable and easy to follow.

Preliminary excercise

Preliminary exercise: using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/collage magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and a mast head. Additionally you must produce a mock-up layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of DTP.

Secondary Teachers

The magazine "Secondary Teachers" is sent to students across the country.
The front page is a wrap up text. When the magazine is opened up the reader recognises both sides been connected.
One side is a boy in school uniform which makes him look smart. He has his hand up in the air which shows he is keen to learn which makes the magazine look convincing. The boy has been placed in front of a white background which makes him stand out more and he has a big smile on his face which shows confidence. The girl on the other hand is looking straight at the boy making him the focus point. She is also in front of a white background and her hair is swept off her face so you can really notice her expression. The white background reflects that the teenagers have been purposely placed there which makes the image abstract. The writing is big and bold which makes it very clear to read. The text on the boys half of the page is mainly blue and the text on the girls section is pink which is stereo-typical of the gender types.
The purpose of this magazine is to advertise new ideas for secondary school teachers considering this is who the magazine target audience is aimed at. As a reader you can see this because the subtitles and headings are talking about difficulties and positive sides of teaching and learning abilities.
Looking at this image i can identify how the two people are feeling. The girl certaintley looks more dominant i feel as her look is quite intimidating and not looking down on the boy but almost suggesting she knows more than him. The girl looks more cocky and confident but not in an annoying way, she looks more mature and intelligent as she is holding a pencil which suggests she is actually working and the boy is too busy showing off which is ususally the case with teenage boys and girls so the image is been gender specific and showing a typical classroom scenario. Where as the boy looks eager and confident but probably less mature about what he knows. He seems to be taking the limelight by putting his hands up and wanting to be centre of attention.

College magazine LIIAR.

Language
The language i am going to use for my college magazine will be informal, i feel this will involve the target audience more. The writing used is going to be conversational slang and i am going involve alliteration to add a bit of humour and relaxation to the article.

Institution
The isntitution is the creator of the college and magazine, in this case i will be the institution.

Ideology
My ideology is to entertain the wyke students before they break up for half term. And to bring the college term to an end in an enjoyable way. Baring in mind halloween would of just passed and my article is based on a halloween catwalk. The article will refer to the up and coming event.

Audience
My target audience is aimed at boys and girls, mainly girls, from the age category of 16-18. It is mainly aimed at girls because its a catwalk including fashion tips etc so the female banding will find it more beneficial were as the male genre will just enjoy it. Teachers and college staff are also welcome and it will be there chance to realise what there students are cabable of doing because some of the costumes will be hand made by textile students. Also photography and art students at the school will be giving a mention if there work was involved in the catwalk.

Representation
My representation is a student catwalk. The male and female students at wyke college are going
to be modeling halloween outfits. Whether it be hand made by some of the textile students in there first or second year or wheter students have gone to the trouble of going out and buying costumes. There will be 6 shows. One of them will be a catwalk where the textile students have made the outifts and boys and girls will be modelling them. There will be a winner from each catwalk based on 4 Judges. One of the judges will be a photography teacher one will be a member of staff from the office and the other two will be students one female from year 12 and one male from year 13. This variety has been chosen because it will deffintley effect of the chosen winner. The second catwalk will be first year girl students not necessarily studying photography, textiles or art. The third catwalk will be males in the first year and for both of these catwalks the students themselves have bought their outfits. The fourth and fith catwalks are the 2nd year students modelling outifts they have bought and finally the last catwalk is teachers and member of staff modelling outfits they have bought. Each catwalk will involve 8 people and their will be a winner for everyone. The prize is free food and drink in the canteen for a week. This event will take place in the theatre on Friday 24th October. It will start at 12:30 and finish at 4:00. The lunch will be an hour earlier than usual. Tickets are £1.50 and will be sold at the guidance office from the 6th October and will stop selling at 11:00 on the 24th.
